Thomas Lanier Williams, más conocido como Tennessee Williams, fue un periodista, escritor y dramaturgo estadounidense que nació en Mississippi el 26 de marzo de 1911 y falleció en Nueva York el 23 de febrero de 1983. Tras acudir a las universidades de Missouri y de Washington, finalmente se licenció en Filosofía y Letras en la Universidad de Iowa. Hijo de unos padres poco amorosos, con una hermana esquizofrénica que pasó casi toda su vida en instituciones mentales, la difícil infancia y adolescencia de Williams, unida a su homosexualidad, le condujeron frecuentemente a la depresión y al alcoholismo, pero también sirvieron como esencia para crear obras que han sido consideradas como las mejores de su tipo. Ejerció como docente de literatura y como periodista hasta que le llegó el éxito sobre los escenarios de Broadway con su obra El zoo de cristal, que recibió el Premio del Círculo de Críticos Teatrales de Nueva York y un premio Pulitzer de teatro, premio que volvería a ganar con Un tranvía llamado deseo que además fue adaptada al cine con éxito, como tantas otras de sus obras, que sirvieron para dar a conocer a grandes del teatro o del cine como Marlon Brando, Paul Newman, Katherine Hepburn o Bette Davis.

La muerte de su secretario y pareja, Frank Merlo, lo condujo a una depresión que acentuó su alcoholismo y abuso de las drogas. Finalmente murió en una habitación de hotel, atragantado con la tapa de un bote de pastillas.
